Prominent nipples can be reduced surgically under local anaesthetic. The procedure is well-tolerated and takes approximately 30 minutes per nipple. The sutures are dissolving and there is minimal downtime, but care must be taken to avoid rubbing or chafing of the nipples as they are healing. We apply thick dressings to protect the nipples, and after several days the patient can simply wear nipple shields (used for breastfeeding) for several weeks.
The operation is done at Dr. Andrade’s accredited private cosmetic surgery facility, The York Plastic Surgery Centre. Local anesthetic is injected into the base of the nipple, the excess tissue is excised, and the wound is sutures with dissolving stitches. A bulky dressing is applied to protect the healing nipples.
The majority of patients heal rapidly and are satisfied with the outcome of prominent nipple surgery. As with any minor surgery procedure there is a risk of bleeding or bruising, infection, delayed wound healing, keloid scars, asymmetry or contour irregularities. Breastfeeding likely will not be possible after nipple reduction surgery.
