Is a breast lift (Mastopexy) right for you?

A common question Dr. Andrade gets asked by patients seeking cosmetic breast surgery, is if they need a breast lift (Mastopexy). Typically, patients who are seeking breast lift surgery are happy with the size of their breasts but would like a better shape. Breast shape can change for many reasons, such as age-related sagging or post-breastfeeding. A breast lift may improve the overall look of the breasts as well as return the nipple to a higher position.

To determine if you need a breast lift, you first need to understand the stages of breast sagging (ptosis):

Stage 1 (mild) – the nipple is a little low but still above the inframammary fold, which is the crease under the breast, where the lower breast meets the chest.Stage 2 (moderate) – the nipple is lower than the inframammary fold but not on the lowest part of the breast.

Stage 3 (severe) – the nipple is at the lowest part of the breast, pointing to the floor.

Most patients with Stage 1 sagging will not necessarily need a lift whereas many patients with Stage 2 sagging will benefit from a breast lift, although it depends on their goals and expectations. The majority of patients with stage 3 sagging will require a lift as the nipple is on the bottom of the breast. Inserting breast implants alone will not correct the low appearance of the nipples, which will still appear to hang off the breasts (called the “waterfall deformity”).

Breast lift surgery will give breasts a firmer, perkier and more youthful shape. If the skin on your breasts is stretched or loose, this is another indication that you may benefit from a lift. Mastopexy surgery will remove the excess skin to provide a tighter look. Keep in mind that the skin will stretch again over time, but it will still remain a superior result than without the lift.

Dr. Andrade will often recommend having breast lift surgery in combination with breast augmentation, as the breasts can be restored to a more youthful shape by increasing volume and upper breast fullness. Dr. Andrade is a body contouring specialist with a 5-star rating on RateMDs and realself.com.
