Body Contouring And Excess Skin Removal By Surgery

Body countouring is desired by a wide range of patients with vastly different goals and body types.  Often the ideal contour is achieved with a combination of procedures to tighten skin, and others to change the contour of an area (for example, liposuction to remove an unwanted bulge, or fat transfer to enhance the contour of an area).

There are literally dozens of different procedures for patients who desire body contouring. During consultation with a plastic surgeon the patient will learn about the different procedures and their unique benefits and limitations.

Some commonly performed body contouring operations performed by Dr. Andrade include:

  • Tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  • Breast lift (mastopexy)
  • Arm lift (brachioplasty)
  • Thigh lift
  • Upper back lift (removal of bra line rolls)
  • Circumferential body lift / belt lipectomy
  • Thoracoplasty (exision of excess skin  on the chest below the armpit)
  • Liposuction contouring

Excess Skin Removal

Patients who have successfully lost a significant amount of weight often are burdened by excess skin that will not tighten despite routine excercise and toning regimens. During the consultation Dr. Andrade will examine each area of concern and describe the treatment options, healing time, risks and benefits in detail. Depending on the amount of surgery required, it may be recommended to perform your operations in two or more stages.

Preparing for Surgery

Prior to considering body contouring surgery, it is ideal to be at a stable body weight.  Patients who have lost a major amount of weight should have reached a stable weight for at least 6-12 months, and ensure they have proper dietary intake to allow for normal healing after surgery.

Location of Surgery

Surgery can be performed in Dr. Andrade’s outpatient clinic, The York Plastic Surgery Centre, or at Southlake Regional Health Centre.  The location of the procedure depends on the preference of the patient, medical issues that might require an overnight stay in hospital for special monitoring, and the total length of the operation.

Postoperative Recovery

The postoperative recovery after body contouring surgery depends on the exact procedures that were performed.  In most cases, patients will take at least 2-3 weeks off work after having mutiple operations, but they will need to avoid heavy lifting for about 6 weeks postoperatively.  Dr. Andrade follows patients closely after their operation and will advise when it is safe to return to work.
