Upper Back Lift
Some people develop significant rolls of skin and fatty tissue on the upper back along the bra line. Even after significant weight loss the excess skin can persist, affecting the appearance of the back, or causing irritation under the bra strap. These can be excised to improve the upper back contour. This operation is commonly performed with breast procedures like breast reduction or mastopexy surgery.
Upper back lift surgery usually takes 2-3 hours to perform under general anesthetic. The operation is performed in Dr. Andrade’s surgicentre or at Southlake Hospital. In many cases this can be performed as an outpatient procedure, and drains are usually not required. Dissolving sutures are used so there is minimal postoperative wound care.
Patients are up and walking on the evening of surgery. Showering is permitted 48 hours postoperatively. Care must be taken to avoid vigorous activities that put tension on the back incisions, for at least 4 weeks. However, most clients can return to light work duties within 1-2 weeks. Dr. Andrade prescribes a regimen to decrease postoperative scarring.
Major complications are uncommon after back lift surgery. Risks include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, delayed healing, wide scars, or major anesthetic-related complications. Dr. Andrade will discuss risks and recovery time in detail during the consultation. This information is intended to complement the advice of a plastic surgeon obtained during a proper consultation, and it is by no means exhaustive or complete.
